CSUEB Cheerleaders Portraits
While taking the Baseball headshots for Cal State East Bay, I received a call to see if I could hop over to the gym to photograph the cheer team.
Though it was last minute, thankfully I didn't have any other assignments that day and was able to take some extra time to photograph these girls.
The cool thing is, there is no official cheer squad, these group of girls organized themselves, coach themselves, pay for their own uniforms and other expenses, all to support the Pioneers!

Headed over to Cal State East Bay for head shots of the Pioneers baseball team.
Though I love shooting action, I also really enjoy shooting these quick head shots of college athletes. It's what I miss the most about no longer working for Cal, so it's great to be able to take them for Cal State East Bay.

Help Portrait 2011
But the daughters were both able to pose long enough to take a picture with their dad... or at least the framed photo of him because he is deceased.

Victor Conte - La Gazetta dello Sport
*Had to wait for the story to come out before I could post this, hope you understand and enjoy =)
Last week received a call from a writer from an Italian newspaper, La Gazetta dello Sport after being recommended by my friend, writer Elliott Almond, thanks Elliott! The writer for La Gazetta dello Sport Massimo, was looking for a photographer to cover two stories on Tuesday and Wednesday (check out Wednesday's story here). He told me Tuesday would be at Victor -somethings- office a half hour south of San Francisco. Massimo has an Italian accent and I couldn't quite catch the last name, but I figured, some time to photograph while he's being interviewed, some time to photograph afterwards, wouldn't be too difficult, could figure out the detail of the last name later.
Tuesday morning, confirm the location with Massimo and learn that it's Victor Conte. Perhaps known as a member of the band Tower of Power, likely more well known as the founder of BALCO, and serving prison time for providing steroids to athletes including Marion Jones, Barry Bonds and Bill Romanowski. Suddenly this changed from covering a guy who somehow is involved with sports. To "oh man, I'm covering a guy who was part of sports largest scandal!"
We arrived at the SNAC - Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning - his new and already successful nutritional supplement brand. There were happy Halloween decorations greeting us, and I knew it was going to be a good day ;-)
Victor introduced himself and was friendly and basically a photographer's best friend, ready to change his shirt, move around chairs, to make sure I had a set up I liked, turning on extra lights, even offering his own light set he had bought for when he does on camera video interviews, he is certainly not camera shy. His office isn't quite photographer friendly with numerous glass framed jerseys, posters signed by some of the biggest names in sports, ads for his products, and interior windows just dying to make reflections that mess up my photos.
He sits down, starts talking about his new, not yet on the market, powder drink.
He then calls his daughter/employee Veronica, to bring us some. In walks Veronica, with two plastic cups full of mysterious pink liquid. Massimo takes a sip from his, and of course I don't want to be rude, so I take a sip. Thinking to myself, it's not every day you can say you drank unmarked liquid from someone who's a convicted felon for providing illegal steroids, I'm sure it's all B-vitamins or something and not full of steroids and my Olympics dreams are long gone anyways so why not! I'm disappointed that after working out back at home, I didn't gain 20lbs of muscle instantly, but I will say, it tasted like pink lemonade and was actually pretty tasty. Guess it's a good thing we weren't doing a story on a cocaine dealer... then I might have opted out on a sample of their new line. haha.
I thought he was going to give Massimo about an hour of time, and me just a few minutes for one posed shot, so I overshot the interview. He ended up talking to Massimo for hours. So much that in the middle of the interview I politely asked them if they would switch chairs because I had exhausted every possible angle and lighting situation.
After the interview portion, well after 5 oclock and the entire staff has left. He granted me four different posed shots. One in front a USA track jacket holding his photo of Marion Jones.
Another in the warehouse amongst all the supplements.
Another in front of the building with the SNAC sign.
And lastly in his office.
I'm sure steroid use is even more rampant than we are aware of, and who's to blame? The creator, the provider, the athlete, the agent, the team, society? As with many the problem is much larger than one party involved. I'm impressed with Victor Conte, he still has the trust of many athletes, earned the trust of some new athletes and is back in full force!
Was great working with Massimo and photographing Victor and looking forward to tomorrow's story!

Cal Rugby Team and Captains
Headed over to Witter Rugby Field today for team and captains photos. When we took the team photo earlier this year (blog post here) one player was unable to make it due to a class conflict. Turns out he is now a likely candidate to earn a varsity letter. All letter winners receive their letter with a team photo, so it was critical for him to be included.
Coach Tom Billups was on hand to open the gate so I could park along Witter Rugby Field, a wonderful convenience to not worry about meters or lugging all my gear up the hill! As always, he also helped determine location, move the bench, arrange the players, coordinate "intense" expression vs smiles, and keep everyone in line, along with Head Coach Jack Clark. Said it many times, but in case you haven't read all my posts, Cal Rugby is one of the best operated programs I've worked with!
GBS intern Lara Brucker joined for the shoot to help set up, serve as a test subject for lighting and bench placement and most critically let me borrow her 24-70mm since my wide angle is with Canon Professional Services getting repaired right now. I could/did shoot the team photo with my 50mm (man, I love that lens!) but it would have been tough to shoot the captains photos with it.
Last team photo day we were unable to take captains photos because we had to get off the field for the scheduled football practice, but today we had the opportunity to photograph the co-captains. Derek Asbun, Jason Law, and Blaine Scully.
And vice-captains, Sean Gallinger, James Bailes, Tom Rooke, and Dustin Muhn.
Taking the captains photos I was catching some flare from the 10am sun, so Lara assisted as a make shift hood extender, holding her hand near my lens to block the sun flare. Can see the flare below, by Derek Asbun's leg on the left, Blaine Scully's face on the right, and next to "guest" on the score board. Probably looked silly as it took some time to make sure Lara's hand blocked the flare but wasn't also in the photo (top right) but made a huge difference once we got it!
I would love to have a chance to have a full portrait session with the athletes as all the co/vice/full captains photos were literally taken within 8 minutes (can you believe that?!) in order to squeeze them in without interrupting practice too much. One location, one light, one set up. Boom, boom, boom!

Cal Women's Crew Head Shots
Headed over to Cal Women's Crew head shots today.
Had been trying to coordinate this since the men's head shots in February so was great to find a day that worked for almost everybody. Shout out to Google Calendar for being the most useful desktop and on the go tool for keeping track of my schedule so I can coordinate everything.
GBS intern Lara Brucker also stopped by and when it was slow, I was able to let her take some of the head shots and give her feedback. Hopefully next season we'll get her out for some outdoor "environmental" head shots, which are a totally different beast than these indoor, white background, two lights, head shots.
A fun tidbit, I was able to meet Rachel, the daughter of one of my photo buddies, Richard Ersted. She was such a sweetheart and knew who I was right away... as KC and I say jokingly, celebrity status!! ;-)

Cal Rugby Team Photo
Headed over to Witter Rugby Field today for the Cal Rugby team photo. Wanted to incorporate the new west side sign, especially because it reads Witter Rugby Field (misleading considering rugby won't be playing there in the next three years while it's temporarily a turf field during Memorial Stadium upgrades). This was challenging not only because of the sun but because of the less than pretty portable construction unit in the background.
So opted for a side view. Thanks to the players for moving the soccer net and bringing over a bleacher.
And Coach Billups for directing all the men.
The rugby program is so organized, it's a real pleasure to work with them. Even in tiny tight spaces, like this one, to catch some of the men for head shots who we were unable to photograph in November.
But you would never know the surroundings from the head shots. Seen below the Hodson twins Colin and Ryan Hodson.
